I have a few tattoos, seven to be exact. In fact, I am trying to work my way to get a full sleeve on my left arm. And what with most of my tattoos being quite visible, and me supposedly being ‘not the type of girl that would get tattoos’, I often get questions about them. I thought I’d compile a list of the questions I get most, and what I think of them.
How much do they cost?
I always get a bit uneasy answering this question. Not because I’ve spent MILLIONS of pounds on my tattoos, but it just feels a bit personal, like asking how much money someone makes. Plus, different studios or artists will charge different rates. Some charge hourly, some by design, it really depends. If you’re asking because you want to see if you are able to afford a tattoo, the best thing I would suggest finding an artist you like and asking for a quote for what you want.
Do they mean anything? Or do you just like the design?
This question used to annoy me, but not so much anymore. A lot of people think that you should only get tattoos that have some sort of deep hidden meaning, and I used to be one of those people. Nowadays, I don’t concern myself with that so much. People change all the time, which means their sentiments can change too. And that’s fine. However, if you get something that looks objectively nice, you’ll always think it’s nice – in my opinion, anyway.
Do you regret them?
Yes, I’ve actually gotten this question, and from more than one person. I don’t know what people expect me to say? “Yes, I spent all this money putting this art on my body, and I’m gonna spend double that to have it lasered off.” It’s as if people assume tattooed folk don’t think long and hard about the designs we want. Most of us do, because we know tattoos are forever.
Do they hurt?
My favourite answer to this one is, “Well, not right now…” Because this is kind of a silly question. Of course tattoos hurt, it’s a needle going into your skin a thousand times a second. But like with anything, everyone is different, which means everyone experiences pain differently. What may be a pinch for me, may be excruciating pain for you, and vice versa.
Aren’t you afraid of how you’ll look when you’re old?
When I’m old I’ll be too preoccupied about whether I have enough pension to live on, and hope my thousands of cats don’t suffocate me in my sleep, to worry about how my tattoos will look. Plus, how many old ladies do you see running around in bikinis, regardless of whether they’re tattooed or not? Not to mention I’m not gonna be the only tattooed oldie in 50 years, there’ll be loads of us and we’ll look like a cool biker gang.
Because I want to? Because it’s my body? Because I think self expression is more than just clothes and make up? Because I think I’ll look like a badass? The list goes on.
And finally, possibly my favourite…
Why is there a moose on your arm?
“IT’S NOT A MOOSE IT’S A STAG!” I often cry desperately. But my top two favourite answers for this are, “I’m Team Goffery” (which is only funny when you know that I don’t watch Game of Thrones) and “I’m just a really big fan of Christmas.” Even though it’s reindeer than pull the sleigh, not moose…
Do you like tattoos? Do you have any tattoos? If not, what would you like to get?
